Descriptions
Astanga Yoga: Astanga Yoga (Ashtanga Vinyasa) is an athletic yoga style brought to the U.S. by Master Teacher K. Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. The “Full” Practice, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Series, assumes an above average level of fitness, flexibility, and/or prior yoga experience. This rigorous asana style uses the breath, fluid movement, and internal awareness to provide a dynamic, vitalizing physical practice, a purifying sweat, and connection to the pranic level of spirit.
Astanga: Beginning: With detail to the basics of the Astanga system this class is appropriate for fit beginners or persons returning to practice, without injuries or pre-existing limitations. These classes prepare students to progress into the fuller practices.
Astanga: Continuing: For students who have an Astanga background or come from some other rigorous/ powerful yoga style. “Continuing” to develop the understanding of the Astanga Series, including full backbends and headstand, in an improvisational format.
Astanga: 1st /Primary Series: Developing strength as well as flexibility, this 2 hour class includes sun salutations, jumping vinyasas, and emphasizes various forward bends, concluding with full backbends and headstand. The class includes detailed directions and options, however it is important for students to make the practice appropriate for themselves and not try to fit their bodies to the practice.
Astanga: Intro to 2nd Series: Second Series / Intermediate Astanga takes a student into deeper understanding of back bending and hip opening postures. In this introduction we will move progressively through the first section of the Second Series.
Astanga: Mysore Practice: A self-practice class as taught in Mysore, India. Students work together in the class without verbal instruction. A flow sheet is permissible until the practice is memorized. This allows the instructor to provide individual attention and hands-on assistance. It is the best way to develop one’s personal practice.
Introduction to Yoga: For those new to yoga or returning after time off, this class is a good place to start. It introduces basic breathing techniques, terminology, and yoga poses (asanas) beginning with movements in a chair. Everyone is welcome!
Bliss/Restorative: Bliss is a meditative, restorative & gentle style of yoga. Bliss Yoga is a spinal opening practice that is based on the premise that most physical pain is rooted at the core of the body;
spine, and central nervous system. By releasing the origin of the pain there is often relief. Resolution of pain can be found in a particular pose when we listen and adjust our bodies so that we can breath comfortably in the postures. In this way, our bodies are able to release the trauma response that began when we were first injured or stressed. All Welcome.
Hatha Basics/ Hatha Flow : All yoga that involves movement is a form of Hatha Yoga. This class will build the foundation for other classes at the studio. We build strength & flexibility equally, thereby reducing the risk of injury. Standing, balancing, seated, and relaxation poses cultivate your body's innate wisdom on how to heal itself. We will also introduce aspects of yoga philosophy, Yama (moral ethics) & Niyama (self discipline).
Kundalini Yoga: All the basics of Kundalini yoga will be covered by this in-depth experience of yogic work. Designed to bring about maximum results and transformation on all levels of mind, body and spirit, the classes include; breath work within physical movements and simultaneous use of mantra (chanting). As a result the mind becomes still, the life force (prana) is enhanced and there develops increased awareness, peace and clarity. Each class includes tuning in, warm-up, exercise set, meditation and deep relaxation with visualization.
Kids Yoga: This class is a 6-week course, and pre-registration is required. Children develop focus, coordination, strength & flexibility in a fun environment with other kids. Yoga is a great way to help a child spend their excess energy in a healthy way! Two age levels 4 to 6 yrs. 7 to 12 yrs. Parents are invited to observe.
Taoist Yoga: Taoist yoga integrates Qi Gong, Tai Qi, Hatha & Kundalini Yoga into a flowing format focused on Qi (prana) cultivation. It is not a strenuous class, but it will incorporate some sun salutations and layer the Eastern practices into the yoga. You will learn some Chinese medical theory, meridian (energy lines) stretches, and Tibetan yoga practices. The focus of the class shifts depending on what the students desire/require that day.
TLC (Tender Loving Care) Yoga: This class is meant for seniors, people with injuries, or anyone who needs individual attention or extra TLC. We start with chair yoga, do some standing exercises and work to stretch & strengthen our bodies from head to toe. We close with reclining postures, twists & a relaxation. Flow and glow!
