Similar
to the martial arts, yoga exercise is used to develop
flexibility, strength, and stamina. There are various
styles of yoga which offer different approaches. Some
are more athletic focusing on physical fitness, while
others emphasize stress reduction and physical rehabilitation.
All styles work to develop a more harmonious relationship
between the body and the mind, or integrated fitness.
Astanga Yoga (also spelled Ashtanga) is an athletic
yoga style, considered by many to be the most advanced
of the physical forms. It is the practice as taught
by T. Krishnamacharya and K. Pattabhi Jois of southern
India. The full practice requires a moderate level of
physical fitness and a willingness to work hard. Director,
Anne Nowell, has taken the full Astanga practice and
broken down its elements to achieve a progression of
understanding from beginning into advanced levels. New
students to the Center are requested to participate
in Beginning Classes, or are invited to attend the Free
Introductory Class. As a student's understanding develops,
attendance in Continuing Classes is encouraged. In
these times, many people have experienced some form
of yoga but generally postural alignment details are
lacking. In order to practice safely new students, even
though knowledgeable of some yoga, should start at the
Beginning thereby minimizing potential risk of injury.
Psychologically,
Astanga Yoga develops the attributes of the warrior
spirit; the balancing of strength with compassion, and
the cultivation of self-development with patience and
kindness.
